Overview

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in animals (BOTH cats and dogs) in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms, Dirofilaria) that are transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Even if “Fluffy” only goes outside to potty, they are still at risk for heartworm disease! It only takes 1 single infected mosquito to contaminate your pet with heartworms; that could be the one mosquito that got into your house last week! They live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected companions, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworm treatment can cost thousands of dollars and months of pain for your furbabies. This is why heartworm prevention is so important! A yearly heartworm test is required by law before our hospital can dispense ANY heartworm preventions. In the hospital we carry: Heartgard (canine), Trifexis (canine) and Revolution (canine and feline). All other heartworm preventions are readily available on our online pharmacy. A $10-50 monthly prevention can save you thousands, yes you read that correctly, thousands of dollars in heartworm treatment if your companion was to contract this deadly worm.

The biggest battle most people face with their companions especially in the tropical state of Florida. According to recent studies FL flea’s (specifically Tampa Bay Area) are one of the most resistant flea’s in the United States; therefore almost all of the OTC products are extremely uneffective (Frontline, Hartz, Sentry, etc). Systemic flea preventions (ex. Nexgard, Simparica, Credelio) have been proven to be the most effective against infestations. FACT: 1 female flea can lay 2,000 yes, TWO THOUSAND eggs in her short lifetime. Therefore, every 1 flea you see there can be up to 2,000 eggs incubating and waiting to hatch. The flea life cycle is anywhere from 2-3 months, therefore if you’re battling an infestation you must treat ALL your companions for a minimum of 3 months to break the life cycle. Flea’s live in the environment and only jump on your pets to feed. They can live in carpet, clothing, baseboards, cracks, etc and carry Tapeworm; therefore when battling an infestation you must also treat the environment on top of your pets. Here at GCVC, we highly recommend keeping your pets on flea prevention all year round. Many of these preventions can also double as tick prevention also, which can carry nasty diseases such as Lyme. A yearly exam and possible heartworm test (depending on which prevention you chose) is required before we can dispense any preventions. We carry in our hospital: Nexgard (canine), Trifexis (canine), Revolution (canine & feline), Capstar (canine & feline) and Cheristin (feline) that treat flea’s. Nexgard doubles as a tick prevention. All other flea/tick preventions are readily available on our online pharmacy.

Intestinal parasites are a serious threat to your companions. Worms such as hookworms live in the sand and are transmitted to your pet’s by them stepping on the eggs then licking their paws; ingesting the eggs. Hookworms (Ancylostoma or Uncinaria) can also penetrate the skin/pads and enter your pets body this way. Hookworms weave themselves into the intestinal lining and feed off the animals blood. They can cause diarrhea and intestinal bleeding; in very rare cases if left untreated can lead to anemia and death. Hookworms like many other worms are Zoonotic, meaning they can pass between animals and humans. Roundworms (Ascaris), tapeworms(Dipylidium or Taenia), whipworms (Trichuris), coccidia (Isospora) and giardia (Giardia) are also a serious threat to your companions. Many of our heartworm/flea/tick preventions also include a form of intestinal parasite prevention. This is why yearly fecal testing is highly recommended! Even if your pet(s) are indoor companions. A yearly exam and heartworm test (depending on which prevention you chose) is required for us to dispense any form of preventions. Ask a friendly staff member for more information!
